SNIPE - Caldonazzo, Italy European Cup / German Open, May 20th -22nd 2005-

The European Cup / German Open of the Snipe class organized by the Associazione Velica Trentina on the lake of Caldonazzo in northern Italy was held over 3 days, from May 20th until May 22nd with the supremacy of Belgians, overtaking the 4 overall places out of 65 snipes competing in the waters of the small Italian Lake.
Boats from all over Italy, from Belgium, Germany, Poland, UK and Brazil have sailed all the 6 races in the afternoon, as on this lake the wind rises always late. The high professionalism of the racing committee, who has been able to move the course in accordance with the wind shifts, has contributed to the good result of the event. Three sunny and warm days with breeze between 8 and 16 knots have allowed to sail one race on Friday, 3 races on Saturday, 2 races on Sunday. Wind shifts and some holes have trapped many, but the best took soon a good lead.
The Belgian snipers were to the fore from the very beginning and they have won all the races with no room for the remaining of the fleet. Only one second place for the Italians Gabriele Bernardis and Stefano Pontalti (3rd race), third places for the brothers Michele and Tommaso De Rosa (2nd race), Dario and Renato Bruni (3rd race), Stefano Longhi and Alessandra Papa (4th and 5th race). The last race proved to be the most exciting as the wind picked up with the Belgian once again taking 1st,2nd and 3rd places. Thierry Den Hartigh e Greet Jansen, closing in second place 4 of the 6 sailed races and winning the other 2 took a lead with a consistent advantage over Emanuel Hens e Thomas Van Schaftinghen who, thanks to one discard and winning the 1st, 5th and 6th race finished 2nd overall. These two skippers have gained the participation to the European Championship which will take place in 2006 in Pori, Finland, to which skippers can enter with previous qualifications.
German National Champions are the brother Robert e Martin Ström, 21st overall, Silver to Gunther Hautmann with his daughter Sabine as crew, 45th overall and third Herbert Hoerterich and Marco Pisetta, 50th overall.
Many mixed crews, a tradition in the snipe class and also many family crews with brothers or fathers and sons have participated to this event.
The regatta is valid also for the “Fancazzisti cup” (local snipers who sail club regattas on Wednesday afternoon and on week ends) and for the Gardansipe Trophy (a newly born formula of 6 regional and district regattas of the area of the Garda Lake and surrounding smaller lakes) which next event will be a regatta on June 18th and 19th again on le waters of the Lake of Caldonazzo.
Of upper level the organization both on the water and on earth, rich prizes and gadgets for all participants, cocktails and dinners with live music, tasting of typical regional products all in the perfect style of the snipe class, which motto is “serious sailing, serious fun”.
