Snipe Fleet 554 and the Jubilee Yacht Club hosted the Snipe New England Championships this weekend off the waters of Beverly, Massachusetts. The event was won on a three way tie break by reigning world champion Tomas Hornos. Winchester sailors Jim Bowers, and John Macrae, rounded out the top three finishers in the 20 boat fleet.

The sailors enjoyed a wide range of conditions of the six race series featuring a 12-15 knot westerly “harbor hurricane” with choppy waters on Saturday. Sunday proved equally challenging, but in a different way, with a 3-5 knot easterly and limited visibility. The sailors enjoyed good grub and beverages to top off each day.

Paul Earl, commodore of the Jubilee Yacht Club and Fleet 554 member said “It is a pleasure to see such a great turnout for our first sanctioned Snipe regatta. Recent upgrades to our facility along with our great sailing venue enable JYC to host such regattas and support small boat sailing. We hope to host many more events like this in the future.” Commodore Earl went on to praise Shan McAdoo, founder and president of Fleet 554, the organizing committee, and the race committee for a fine job in running the event.

The Snipe class also demonstrated their generosity. During this event, a silent auction was held to benefit SailSalem (www.sailsalem.org) , a community sailing program in Salem, MA. The auction raised over $2, 000 cash for the program based on donations from Atlantis Weathergear, Henri Lloyd, North Sails, Quantum Sails, Kinder Industries, RW Rope, Harvey Rigging, Chris Small Boat Works, Harbor Sweets, A & J Artisan Bakery, and Rowand Fish Market.
