Wednesday - Feb 14 2007 / 1119 PST - Below decks there are a host of design details intended to squeeze an advantage on the race course, one of which is the way that the mast is raked fore and aft. Adjusting mast rake is critical for changing modes, and maintaining balance through all configurations of the boat. While most teams pin their mast at deck level, some run the heel plug in a curved track inside the boat that sweeps back and forth while others are suspending their masts in a V-shaped cradle slung beneath the deck. In this configuration, a pair of stays run down from the underside of the chainplates and connect to the heel of the mast, carrying the compression load. With the mast pinned in the horizontal/athwartships plane at the deck, the rig can then be raked fore and aft easily. Story by Matthew Sheahan. Photo courtesy of Team Luna Rosa.
